Rashid Waris’s journey with ISSofBC showcases resilience and the impact of community support. Once a RAP client arriving in Vancouver through the Afghan Special Initiative, he now works as a Housing Case Manager, helping newcomers build a fresh start in Canada. Here is Rashid’s story, shared in his own words below.
My journey with ISSofBC began as a Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) client who arrived in Vancouver as part of the Afghan Special initiative. I received guidance and support during the challenging transition to my new country Canada. The comprehensive resources and services offered by ISSofBC, including housing support, orientations, and community integration, played a crucial role in helping me settle into my new environment in Vancouver. With their assistance, I successfully found housing and gained valuable insights into navigating life in Canada. Today, I am proud to give back by working as a Housing Case Manager with ISSofBC’s Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP), helping other newcomers overcome similar challenges and build a foundation for their future.
Working with ISSofBC’s RAP team has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Every day, I witness the resilience of newcomers and the transformative impact of the support we provide. From securing safe and affordable housing to offering guidance on life skills, I am honored to be part of a team that empowers individuals and families to start fresh in their new home Canada. My own journey with ISSofBC has come full circle, and I am deeply motivated to ensure that others feel the same sense of belonging and hope that I once received.
